There's More Than One Way to Treat
Oral and Periodontal Diseases

Friday, October 28, 2011

Location: University of Toronto Centre for Continuing Dental Education, 1440 Don Mills Road, Toronto, ON

Dr. Tenenbaum

Howard Tenenbaum
DDS, Dip. Perio., PhD, FRCD(C)

Course Outline

Dr. Tenenbaum will outline various emerging and new technologies and approaches relating to the management of periodontal and other oral diseases including mucocutaneous diseases that can masquerade as gingivitis or periodontitis. The participants will learn about the use of enamel matrix proteins for regenerative surgery as well as for root coverage surgery. There will be some information relating to approaches to reduce pain and other sequelae related to mucogingival surgery.

As well, Dr. Tenenbaum will focus on ways to treat periodontitis that use a medical model as opposed to strictly a surgicalmodel and this discussion will include information pertaining to the identification and treatment of patients with refractory or non-responsive periodontitis.

Time-permitting there will also be instruction on the use of locally administered antimicrobials for treatment of conditions ranging from localized periodontal pocketing to periimplant mucosal inflammation (PIMI) including a novel classification model as well as proposed research studies that are aimed at understanding PIMI more clearly. This will lead to more biologically rational treatment/preventive strategies that can be developed given the current rapid rise and expected meteoric increase in the presentation of patients with this condition in the near future.

Course Objectives

Participants can expect to learn how to manage refractory periodontal disease, and treat PIMI using the best available methods, understand regenerative periodontal surgery and root coverage procedures. They will also learn to recognize common oral mucocutaneous diseases and to learn how to treat these conditions.
