Course Outline
Oral-systemic linkages have now been proposed for numerous years without a true understanding of the mechanisms underlying these connections. As research continues to evolve rapidly in this emerging discipline, it is critical that oral health professionals be fully informed of the most current developments and deficiencies in the literature in order to provide the best counsel and care for their patients. This presentation will discuss the most current research outcomes for all oral-systemic linkages including several new proposed relationships. A thorough description and discussion of new developments in the critical role of inflammation and its impact on the whole area of oral-systemic medicine, will be provided. The role of oral health professionals in this dynamic new area of health will be discussed including suggested therapies and strategies for improving the overall health of the public.
Course Objectives
This presentation will provide the participant with:
- A review of oral inflammation and a detailed description of its significance to systemic inflammation.
- An understanding of the current research literature for the proposed linkages between oral health and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases; respiratory diseases; diabetes and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
- An introduction into several newly proposed oral-systemic linkages and a summary of research to date for these emerging areas.
- Strategies for staying current with the literature in this rapidly evolving area of science, including basic interpretation tips.
- Knowledge of oral interventions that have produced positive systemic changes resulting in potential risk reduction.
- A new outlook on the role of oral health professionals and our contribution to the overall health of the public.

Biography
Prof. Lavigne received a diploma in Dental Hygiene from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biomedical Anthropology from Lakehead University and a Master of Science degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Missouri- Kansas-City, School of Dentistry. Currently she is completing a PhD degree in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. Prof. Lavigne served as Coordinator of Dental Programs at Confederation College; was Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene at Wichita State University and was the Director, School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba for 13 years where she now serves as a full Professor and teaches periodontology to both dental and dental hygiene students. Her research interests currently lie in oral systemic medicine, periodontology and the older institutionalized adult. Professor Lavigne has authored more than 20 peerreviewed Journal articles in National and International Journals as well as 3 textbook chapters. She has delivered over 75 continuing education professional presentations in numerous countries including Italy, Sweden, China, the U.S. and Australia. Additionally, Professor Lavigne has held numerous professional appointments including President of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association; Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada; Chair of the Canadian Foundation for Dental Hygiene Research and Education; and Councilor for the Section on Dental Hygiene Education, American Dental Education Association. Salme received the Alumni of Distinction Award from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2004 and most recently, the Alumni Honouree of Distinction Award from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto in 2008.
