Course Overview
The course on small field-of-view cone beam CT (cbCT) is a didactic and clinical hand’s on course that will introduce the participants to the principles of cbCT and its applications in dentistry. The course is designed to meet the educational requirements of the RCDSO Standard of Practice-Dental CT Scanners. The Standard of Practice can be viewed on the RCDSO web site, in the Professional Practice section. Certificates of completion will be provided to dentists who complete this course, including a satisfactory assessment of the knowledge they have gained.
The course content will include reviews of:
- the biological effects of ionizing radiation and radiation dosimetryn
- patient selection criteria and the radiographic examination
- review of normal anatomy in cbCT scans
- image interpretation of oral and maxillofacial pathoses including cases
- reporting of images
- medical legal issues and risk management
As well, each participant will gain experience in patient positioning and image reconstruction.
Legislative Update: When will dentists be able to purchase, install and use small field-of-view cbCT?
The Standard of Practice was passed by RCDSO on April 18, 2011. In late May, 2011 the government of Ontario also
passed this standard which essentially removed the government’s moratorium that was in place. The Standard requires
that a dentist who wishes to have a small field of view cbCT have a Facility Permit from RCDSO. The Council
of RCDSO has now passed a proposed by-law that outlines the Facility Permit and the fee that will be charged for it
and has circulated this proposed by-law to all of its members for comment. The Council will meet in March and a final
by-law will be presented. Facility permits are expected to be available shortly after the RCDSO Council meeting passes
the final by-law.
The University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry appreciates the unrestricted educational grant provided by Carestream Health/Kodak Dental Systems, Henry Schein and Sinclair Dental.
