Course Overview
The greatest impact of cosmetic or esthetic dentistry is providing patients with beautiful smiles that enhance self-esteem and encourages them to refer. However, materials and techniques have undergone significant evolution in recent years and dentists are challenged to keep current. In addition, esthetic standards have been raised and quality outcomes redefined by today's educated patient. This presentation will illustrate the value of using direct composite resin for treating anterior restorative needs and cosmetic desires. The logical, conservative techniques shown will lead to results that please the patient and the dentist.
In the hands-on workshop participants will have the opportunity to use Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent), a new, state of the art, naturally shaded composite system. Exercises will include placement of an invisible Class IV and, time permitting, closure of a diastema. Magnification loupes are suggested. All other materials will be provided.

- Rationale of additive dentistry versus subtractive
- Materials and systems
- Opacity/Translucency, Form, Color, Characterizations, Texture and Surface contour
- The invisible Class IV, diastema closure, basic veneers, complex veneers, instant orthodontics, veneering a dark tooth, etc.

- To gain an appreciation for conservative direct resin restorations
- To learn the essential features of a naturally shaded composite system
- To understand the stratification of opacities to achieve life-like restorations
- To be able to apply these conservative techniques practically and efficiently in a general practice
- To increase the joy of dentistry by enhancing patients’ smiles

**A component of Esthetic Dentistry Courses
The goal of the University of Toronto Esthetic Dentistry courses is to provide participants with a logical and insightful perception as to how to examine, treatment plan and deliver dentistry to their patients that is functional, esthetic and optimally maintainable.
The courses will be run in logical progression in order to give each practitioner insight, perception, and the vision to achieve their restorative esthetic goals. Treatment planning and working with a dental team of specialists is stressed. Although there is no way to learn everything in just seven sessions, participants will acquire the fundamentals and direction to continue their quest for dental excellence.
Participants who successfully complete seven courses in a period not exceeding three years from the date they begin this program will receive a certificate from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education. This certificate will not confer specialty status nor is it meant to infer superior qualifications but is recognition of the dentist’s participation in this Continuing Dental Education program. Each of the programs will take place on a Friday and Saturday in Toronto. Each course will consist of a full day lecture on Friday followed by hands-on participation on Saturday to allow the participant to fully understand and practice what they have learned the previous day.

Ronald D. Jackson, DDS, FAACD, DABAD
Dr. Ron Jackson is a 1972 graduate of West Virginia University School of Dentistry. He has published many articles on esthetic, adhesive dentistry and has lectured extensively across the United States and abroad. Dr. Jackson has presented at all the major U.S. scientific conferences as well as to Esthetic Academies in Europe, Asia and South America. He is an Accredited Fellow in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, a Diplomate in the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry and is Director of the Advanced Adhesive Aesthetic Dentistry and Anterior Direct Resin programs at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Jackson practices comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry in Middleburg, Virginia.
