Dr. Thuan Dao
Course Outline
The objectives of this session are:
- to improve the understanding of pain mechanisms and pathophysiology;
- to enhance the pain diagnostic skills;
- to provide the clinician with the latest evidence for choosing management strategies for orofacial pain.
Summary
While chronic orofacial pain often represents a challenge for the dental practitioner, studies on trigeminal pain mechanisms have provided the basis for understanding complex clinical phenomena such as neuropathic associated with dental treatments, the spread of pain beyond the injured site, and its persistence after complete healing has taken place. Pain mechanisms illustrated with clinical examples will therefore be addressed first during this presentation.
The understanding of the above issues will be instrumental for establishing the differential diagnosis and management of orofacial pains. The last part of the presentation will focus on evidence-based management strategies for such condition, including dental, pharmacological, and behavioural approaches.
