Course Outline

This course will present dental photography not just as a record of existing conditions or treatment completed, but as a communication tool with the patient, the lab, referral sources and for marketing. Photography is an art and photos in dentistry should follow art guidelines. The smile is used to sell in general marketing and expectations by patients and others are influenced by the advertising and photographic industry.

This course will demonstrate high quality dental photos meeting all dental and art guidelines. Technique and equipment are equally important. Which equipment, lighting and accessories give highest quality images with the least interference in a practice, including a simplified portrait system beyond the "mug shot" medical model will be indicated. Simplified management software to modify, correct and manage, and using photos to communicate using tablet PC and annotations on screen will be demonstrated and used.

It is not required that participants purchase the suggested equipment below if they choose not to.

There will be cameras at the course as well as contrasters, however, if the participant has his/her own camera, it is better as he/she can use it and calibrate it.

It is suggested that each participant have a SLR digital camera set up for dental photography, lateral and occlusal mirrors (lingual perio mirror if possible) cheek retractors, and contrastors to block out objectionable oral distractions. A few contrastors and other accessories will be available to use. Visit www.photomed.net to see the recommended accessories, camera systems, and the simplified portrait system we will be using. A laptop computer will be useful to manage photos. The ideal laptop is a tablet PC running on Windows XP or Vista Ultimate.

A trial copy of a recommended software (ACDSee 10) can be downloaded from www.acdsee.com. If you want to purchase the software, discounts can be found by searching Google under ACDSee 10 discounts or promotions.

**A component of the Restorative Esthetic Continuum

Back to Course Overview

The goal of the University of Toronto Advanced Restorative Esthetic Continuum is to provide participants with a logical and insightful perception as to how to examine, treatment plan and deliver dentistry to their patients that is functional, esthetic and optimally maintainable.

Participants will receive a certificate from the University of Toronto Continuing Dental Education once completing each of the seven programs over a period not exceeding three academic school years. Each of the seven programs will take place on a Friday and Saturday in Toronto, Ontario. Each 2-day program will consist of a lecture and a hands-on component. The hands-on component will allow each participant to fully understand and practice what they have learned and to satisfy the University requirement to be able to give a certificate. Space is limited to 32 participants per session.

The courses are run in logical progression in order to give each doctor insight, perception, and the vision to achieve their restorative esthetic goals. Treatment planning and working with a dental team of specialists is stressed, although there is no way to learn everything in seven sessions, participants will acquire a fundamental and direction to continue their quest for dental excellence.
