Cancer Symposium Overview
Cancer and cancer treatments can have significant implications for oral health and dental care. A good understanding of those implications is very important for the dental treatment recommendations and treatment options presented to patients affected by cancer.
Privately practicing dentists in the community are often circumspect about treating patients who are either undergoing cancer treatment or have had cancer treatment because they are concerned about potential risks associated with side effects that may make dental care unsafe. Also, the dentist may be unaware of the more recent types of cancer therapy and may simply refuse to see the patient because of this lack of knowledge. Unfortunately, the cancer patient may feel even more stigmatized because of this refusal.
Dentists often seek advice from the dental oncology unit at Princess Margaret Hospital regarding what they can or cannot do for their patient because of a lack of knowledge of current cancer care.
As the population ages and more and more patients are surviving their cancer, it is important for the community dentists to have knowledge about safe dental treatment. The oral health of the cancer patient is extremely important for their quality of life and the dental professional must be able to feel confident in providing optimal care for this special group of patients. The symposium will discuss implications for dental treatment for patients at a time when they are either undergoing cancer treatments, about to undergo cancer treatments or have a history of cancer treatment.
The objective will be to provide dentists with some fundamental knowledge that will allow them to provide better care to their patients and to help them communicate with cancer specialists more productively when deciding treatment options for specific patients.
After this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify a suspicious oral (possibly premalignant lesion) of the oral cavity and arrange for the appropriage follow-up and referral if necessary
- Perform a thorough medical history and review of systems of a patient with cancer.
- Provide a treatment plan for a patient undergoing cancer therapy taking into consideration the type of cancer, the therapy provided for it and the subsequent side effects
- Manage the oral side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy
- Manage emergency dental care for a patient undergoing cancer treatment
- Provide routine dental care for the patient with a history of cancer
